The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and U.S. customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre. The most common use of the acre is to measure tracts of land. One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet. While all modern variants of the acre contain 4,840 square yards, there are alternative definitions of a yard, so the exact size of an acre depends on which yard it is based on. Originally, an acre was understood as a selion of land sized at one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide; this may have also been understood as an approximation of the amount of land an ox could plough in one day. A square enclosing one acre is approximately 208 feet and 9 inches (63.6 metres) on a side. But as a unit of measure an acre has no prescribed shape; any perimeter enclosing 43,560 square feet is an acre in size. The acre is often used to express areas of land. In the metric system, the hectare is commonly used for the same purpose. An acre is approximately 40% of a hectare. One acre is 90.75 percent of a 100-yard (91.44-meter) long by 53.33-yard (48.77-meter) wide American football field (without the end zones). The full field, including the end zones, covers approximately 1.32 acres (0.53 ha). It is also approximately 56.68 percent of a 105-meter (344.49-foot) long by 68-meter (223.10-foot) wide Association football pitch (soccer field). It may also be remembered as 44,000 square feet, less 1%; or as the product of 66 x 660. My wife and I were having a debate on California's current wildfires, and the question of how many acres are burned in a controlled manner came up. Anybody know the answer? I was curious about the ratio of wildfire acres (which I was able to get from Wikipedia) to controlled acres. Asked by NS - Wed Jul 9 08:46:49 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Here's a link to some CDF stats (1989-2002) and burn policy. For that time period, 27,000 acres average per year. Here's another link with other CDF factoids and more recent stats on California fires. Stack an extra chair in front of the computer and have fun debating with the wife tonight! Answered by Craig H - Wed Jul 9 10:38:56 2008 Why are my 7 acres of pumpkins wilting? Q. We have 20 acres of pumpkins doing great in one of our feilds. But our other feild of 7 acres of pumpkins are wilting. They are pretty early and have not even begun to flower yet. We cannot find any sign of bugs, beetles, or powdery mildew. We are doing the exact same watering as in the other feild. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Is it possible that something is wrong with the soil in this particular feild? Should we hurry and fertalize? Any advice would be very appreciated! Asked by Ashley LaLa - Tue Jul 15 16:42:48 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Contact your soil conservation district, run by the state university. But don't wait, do it as soon as possible. They should give you needed information. That is their job providing information for farmers. Good luck on your crop. Answered by ROBERT S - Tue Jul 15 17:06:38 2008 How many acres of land does Disny have?
Q. I have heard many different number and would like to know what is the close number. And another question, how did Disney buy so many acres without running out of money? Asked by Bush Support - Thu Sep 20 15:11:48 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think you might be talking about Walt Disney World. Actually sarge927 is the closest. The total number of square miles is 47. I do not know the exact number but it is 47 square miles of swampy, marsh land. Walt Disney started purchasing the land in the early 1960's. Walt never wanted to be seen buying the property or any traces that he was buying the property. Every time that Disney went to Florida, he had his helicopter pilot stop at different airports across the country to throw people off his trail. At that time Orlando was just a very small city nothing like it is today. The first parcel of land that Disney bought was from a Florida Senator. He bought the 47 square miles through fake companies. After a while the news broke. Land… [cont.] Answered by Drew - Fri Sep 21 11:47:16 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "acres" Golf Roundup: Hudson's Glynn medals - Hopkinton Crier
