Fairfield County, Connecticut Sheriff's Department Information

The Fairfield County Sheriffs Department was a law enforcement agency in Fairfield County, Connecticut in place until the year 2000 when a majority vote eliminated the position of High Sheriff (one month later all deputy sheriffs in the state were transferred to the position of State Judicial Marshals under the local county branch) in Connecticut counties after the topic was brought up by then Connecticut state attorney general Richard Blumenthal.

The Fairfield County Sheriff's Department served as security for the county court houses, carried out arrest warrants and transported prisoners for the county until December 2000, when Connecticut eliminated the position of sheriff in all Connecticut Counties. The department previously had law enforcement powers but did not use them in modern times because most towns and cities in Fairfield county had their own police departments. The only exception was and still is the Town of Sherman in the very northern corner of the county. Unlike counties in most other states in the United States, in Connecticut, county sheriffs did not act as the primary law enforcement and patrol agencies for areas of the county not served by a municipal police department. That job fell upon the Connecticut State Police's Resident State Trooper and still does to this day. Sherman participates in the Resident State Trooper program, under which the Connecticut State Police has at least one State Trooper every 24 hours assigned to act as the primary law enforcement officer for the entire town, performing routine patrols and law enforcement duties.

Now, instead of a county sheriff, Fairfield County is split into three judicial districts (Fairfield, Stamford-Norwalk, and Danbury), each with its own Chief Judicial Marshal
